Gwen Norville




Gwen Norville, 55, went home to be with Jesus on Monday at Rex Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at Tanglewood Church, 2103 Rouse Rd., Kinston, NC at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 16, 2017 with Pastor David Frye and W. David Guice officiating. A private burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Gwen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Mount Olive College, and an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Carteret Community College. Gwen was a Deputy Secretary with the Department of Public Safety. She held oversight responsibility for Prisons, the Office of Staff Development and Training, Combined Records, Women’s Services, and Correction Enterprises. Gwen was a passionate champion for correctional officers and prisons.

During her more than 30 years of experience in corrections, Gwen’s influence was felt in nearly every aspect of Prisons management and operations, from implementation of Justice Reinvestment reforms to correctional officer hiring and retention initiative. She served in numerous positions of leadership prior to being named Deputy Secretary, most recently as Executive Officer for ACJJ.

A Kinston native, Gwen firmly believed in the importance of giving back to the community and to her profession. She started the Bertie County High School Public Safety Cadet Program in Windsor, a program designed to inspire students to consider careers in corrections and law enforcement. She led the way in developing and implementing a statewide first-line supervisory and mid-level managers training program, and helped open the Confinement in Response to Violation centers in Robeson, Burke and Buncombe counties. She served the citizens of North Carolina with distinction and honor.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy F. Norville.

She is survived by a loving family which includes her father, Robert L. Norville, of Grifton; brother, Robert L. “Robbie” Norville, Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Kinston; nephew, Will Norville, of Greenville. Gwen was loved by all her extended family, her treasured friends, her incredible work family at DPS and her beloved dog, Ellie.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, September 15, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 712 Airport Rd., Kinston, NC from 6:00-9:00pm and other times at 2531 Pineridge Drive in Kinston, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
