Joan Marie Rinearson

April 11, 1922 – May 17, 2017

Joan Rinearson, 95, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at The Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro. She was born April 11, 1922 in Kedainiai, Lithuania to Michalina and Casimir Bazis. With her parents, grandfather, and older brother, Walter, she moved to Rochester, NY in 1923. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1937, and Joan graduated from Saint Casimir’s High School there in 1940. She attended the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing and received her degree in nursing from there in February 1944.

In 1946, Joan became an Army nurse and was stationed in Germany when she met a dashing young second lieutenant, Abram V. Rinearson, III (Bud). They became engaged that September, and he wrote home to tell his mother that he had fallen for an intelligent girl from Pittsburgh who had “the loveliest eyes and the prettiest smile imaginable.” They married in January 1947 and moved together to new duty stations until Bud’s retirement from the Army in 1975, when they moved to Los Gatos, CA. Together, they raised four confident, strong, and loving daughters. Joan’s lifelong passion was golf which she played regularly (sometimes doing 18 holes in the morning and another 18 in the afternoon) until her knees made the game difficult for her at 86.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers Walter, John, and Casimir, her sister Irene, and her son-in-law Thomas Crowder.

She is survived by her sisters, Ceil Rhodes, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and Gloria Bazis, Torrance, CA; her daughters, Linda Rinearson of Newton, MA; Katherine Winslow and her husband James of Tarboro, NC; Judith Rinearson and her husband Nick Lewis of Montclair, NJ; and Roberta Rinearson and her husband Robert Fowkes of Medford, MA. She is also survived her 9 grandchildren: Jonathan Crowder, Shanghai, China; Rebecca Crowder, Berkeley, CA; Franklin Winslow, Philadelphia, PA; Michael Winslow and his wife Hilary Moise and their son Davis, Sacramento, CA; Alex Lewis, Philadelphia, PA; James Rinearson, Montclair, NJ; Hannah Lewis, Olympia, WA; Katie Fowkes, Boston, MA; Will Fowkes, Cambridge, MA.

Joan and her family were grateful for the loving care and faithful support of her friend and companion Shirley Mays; and for the gentle and loving care of the caregivers and nursing staff at The Fountains at the Albemarle.

The family will gather for a memorial service in Liberty, NY on August 5, 2017. Joan was an avid reader and a lover of art; in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Friends of Edgecombe County Memorial Library (909 Main Street, Tarboro, NC 27886) or to your favorite library or art museum.
